Chapter Fifteen

Talos shivered when he woke up. As he lay in bed listening, he heard the wind gusting and the rain splattering on the wood outside. He dared to take a peek outside, opening the shuttered window in the bedroom. Rain instantly coated his muzzle. Talos rubbed his paws.

This would be a wonderful day to nurse Wendy back to health without her feeling like it was any hardship to him.

With the heavy rain blowing against a black and gray sky outside, he knew it was safe to light a fire. When he finished making the fire, he woke up Wendy, who looked clear-eyed and clear-headed as she sat up.

“It’s a wet, rainy mess outside. My father used to hate days like this, but my mother adored them. She would call them farmer’s holidays. She was wrong, of course.” Talos kissed Wendy’s cheek and she laughed. “There are still a million things to do when you’re a farmer, you just end up doing them wet. But it’ll be a holiday for us.”

Wendy’s eyes lit up. “Like a vacation day?”

“Yes. A vacation day.”

“We never had those. Oh, we would get seven free days every year to go do something, but we never could afford to go far, and leaving was more trouble than it was worth, anyway. If you left, you had to go through an awful isolation and screening period before coming back to work or being allowed in your own room. And only two of us could ever go at once. If you stayed at the Labs, you could go to the recreation room all day or spend the time alone in your room.”

Talos winced. “Well, we are staying inside, but I hope you’ll like what we do in here.”

“Mm.” Wendy arched one eyebrow. “Just what did you have in mind?”
